About Mutual and Federal
Mutual and Federal started out as the South African Fire and Life Assurance Company, and was established in 1831. This makes Mutual and Federal one of the oldest short term insurance companies on the South African market. Beginning in the 1960s, Mutual and Federal Insurance underwent a merger with Old Mutual, and the company eventually became a fully owned subsidiary of the Old Mutual Group in 2010. Mutual and Federal is currently headed by Mike Harper, Chairman, and Raimund Snyders, CEO.

Which Services Do Mutual and Federal Provide?
Mutual and Federal divide their insurance offerings into three categories: business, agriculture and personal. In terms of personal insurance Mutual and Federal offer four insurance packages, each of which have a range of insurance options including vehicle, buildings and household contents insurance.
Home Insurance with Mutual and Federal
As mentioned above, Mutual and Federal offer four personal insurance packages, each of which can be modified with different elements to meet your needs (for example, you can choose whether or not you want boat insurance included in your insurance). The Mutual and Federal website do not make it clear whether you can choose only the home contents insurance, or if you must include other options as well. However, all four of the offered packages do include household insurance.
allsure offers a package that covers a combination of buildings, watercraft, valuable items, personal computer, vehicle and home contents insurance. The Mutual and Federal website does not give details on what is and is not covered by the household insurance option. However, all allsure clients receive access to Swiftcare an emergency telephone system that provides help with roadside assistance, home assistance and medical benefits.
surewise offers a combination of buildings, personal and legal liability, general and specified goods, vehicle, comprehensive caravan or trailer, motorbike, SASRIA limited (to protect against damage caused by strikes or riots) and household contents insurance. Again, the Mutual and Federal website does not list specifics of what is and is not covered. They do however list the following features of the surewise policy:
- A choice of fixed excess options (you can find out more about excesses on our household insurance terms and definitions page);
- Adjustments in your premium every year to take into account assets that may have gone down in value (such as vehicles, for example);
- 10% of your paid premiums will be given back to you after three years if you have not made any claims;
- After three years with no claims the excess will be waived on your first claim;
- Should you be retrenched your premiums will be waived for up to six months;
- Access to an international SOS emergency service for help both on the road and at home.
Insurance 4 All
Insurance 4 All offers only buildings and home contents insurance, and you may choose either or both. The Mutual and Federal website again does not list any details about coverage, but does offer the following list of benefits (though is not clear whether these benefits are connected to both buildings and contents insurance or not):
- Includes funeral insurance up to R5,000;
- Up to R50,000 coverage for personal liability, though from the website it seems that this may only be for those who opt for buildings insurance.
iWYZE is an insurance package offered by Old Mutual (who as you'll recall own Mutual and Federal). This package includes buildings, personal liability, personal goods, vehicle, trailer and caravan, motorcycle, boat and household insurance. You can find out more about the iWYZE home contents policy by reading our review of Old Mutual Insurance.
Obviously, this isn't a great deal of information about coverage when it comes to household insurance options from Mutual and Federal. However, as the company website states in many places Mutual and Federal policies are flexible to meet your personal needs, so we assume that coverage on your policy will depend on your personal situation. This does make it tough to evaluate home contents insurance from Mutual and Federal, or to compare their offerings to those of other companies though.
How Are Consumer Reviews for Mutual and Federal?
The consumer review website hellopeter lists 278 reviews concerning Mutual and Federal from the last year. Of these reviews, 237 were complaints, which gives Mutual and Federal an 85% negative rating. The vast majority of complaints were about Mutual and Federal's customer service. However, we must keep a few things in mind. Firstly, these reviews are for all of Mutual and Federal's services, they're not just from household insurance policy holders, though it is unlikely that consumer experience is different depending on which products they purchase. Secondly, people are far more likely to report negative rather than positive experiences. And thirdly, despite complaints about customer service a Mutual and Federal representative has responded to every one of the reviews received, indicating that online customer service is somewhat of a priority.
How User Friendly is the Mutual and Federal Website?
The Mutual and Federal website is fairly user friendly in terms of navigation. It's easy to find the pages you're looking for, and there are very few technical terms used, making for easy reading. However, there's little in depth information available about policies, which can make evaluating their offerings difficult. Not only that, but we are still very unclear on the difference between the four products offered to home contents insurance shoppers, other than that they offer different combinations of kinds of insurance. Whilst the Mutual and Federal website gives a nice overview of their products we feel that the company could do a better job of explaining exactly what will be covered or not covered in policies, as well as the difference between their various options.
Mutual and Federal in a Nutshell
Mutual and Federal offer four short term insurance packages that include a home contents insurance option, however there are few details about policies given on the company website. Plus, consumer reviews of Mutual and Federal aren't especially encouraging. However, knowing which policy is for you isn't just a matter of other people's opinion. It is important that you always get quotes from as many places as possible, since this will put you in the best position to choose the best option for your personal needs.
