Sanlam was founded in 1918 as an insurance company, but has since grown into one of the largest financial services groups in the country. The current head of Sanlam South Africa, Johan van Zyl, is credited with expanding the growth of the company. Sanlam Insurance at one point held a stake in Absa Insurance, but sold this holding and now own Channel Life, African Life and Safrican. Recent news from the company includes the fact that Sanlam are in the midst of a brand update in an effort to attract more young customers to the financial services market.

Which Services Do Sanlam Insurance Provide?
As a large financial services provider, Sanlam caters to a large range of services, including investments, loans, savings and trusts. On the insurance front, Sanlam offers life insurance as well as short term insurance options such as vehicle and home contents insurance.
Household Insurance with Sanlam
Home insurance options from Sanlam are slightly different from those offered by other insurance companies that we've reviewed. Basically, Sanlam uses two other insurance companies to provide their short term insurance: Santam and MiWay. Sanlam and Santam were founded by the same people and whilst Sanlam deals with long term insurance, Santam deals with short term insurance. MiWay is owned by Santam. All of this is very confusing, we know.
For you as a customer this means that you have three options. The Sanlam website directly connects you to either Santam or MiWay for your short term insurance needs. However, you can also purchase household insurance directly through Sanlam. The company website says that Sanlam have negotiated a special deal with Santam to provide short term insurance. Sanlam will therefore review your needs and recommend the correct Santam policy for you (and will not charge you any policy fees).
In essence this means that policies for home contents insurance offered by Sanlam are the same as those offered by either MiWay or Santam. In order to learn more about these policies you can read our reviews of MiWay Insurance and Santam Insurance.
How is Customer Feedback for Sanlam?
Hellopeter, a website that lets customers post reviews of service providers, has 298 reviews of Sanlam posted over the last twelve months. 253 of these reviews are complaints, giving Sanlam an 85% negative rating. Many of these complaints centre around customer service. However, firstly these reviews are about all of Sanlam's services (not just insurance), and to be fair a lot of complaints seemed to be from investment customers rather than home insurance customers. Secondly, every single report had feedback (and often updated feedback as well) from a Sanlam representative. This indicates that online customer service at least is important to the company, and that Sanlam are listening to customer feedback.
How User Friendly is the Sanlam Website?
The Sanlam website is nicely laid out and easy to navigate, and everything is explained in clear terms, with little technical language. Given that Sanlam offers home insurance policies through MiWay and Santam there are no policy explanations on the site. However, the Sanlam website does make it very clear what your choices are when it comes to getting short term insurance, and even links to the appropriate pages for both MiWay and Santam. All in all, Sanlam gives a great, hassle free user experience on their website, and we really have no complaints.
Sanlam in Conclusion
Sanlam offers short term insurance through two related companies: MiWay and Santam. This means that if you're interested in buying household insurance you can find out more information about policies by reading our reviews of the above two companies. Customer reviews of Sanlam aren't great, but if home contents insurance is what you're looking for you may be better off looking at customer reviews for either Santam or MiWay. As always, it's best to get quotes from as many companies as possible when insurance companies, which will mean you're able to compare policies and get the right deal for you.
